Perchlorate Salt Effects on Rock Weathering on Mars at the Phoenix Landing Site

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Statement of the problem: The Phoenix Mission was the first to land in the polar regions on Mars. The mission revealed three surprising results: (1) The surface at the landing site had a very low concentration of large size rocks, (2) The unexpectedly sticky nature of the soil prevented it initially from falling through one of the instrument’s screens as planned, (3) Perchlorate salt was found at a high concentration (~1%) in Martian soil. Further study could prove that the three results are related. The scientific results of the Phoenix mission motivate a return to that site with a mission capable of drilling into the ice-cemented ground. To design a mission we must understand the engineering properties of the soil, salt, ice and rock environment.

Stability of perchlorate hydrates and their liquid solutions at the Phoenix landing site, Mars

[1] We studied the low-temperature properties of sodium and magnesium perchlorate solutions as potential liquid brines at the Phoenix landing site. We determined their theoretical eutectic values to be 236 ± 1 K for 52 wt% sodium perchlorate and 206 ± 1 K for 44.0 wt% magnesium perchlorate. Evaporation rates of solutions at various concentrations were measured under martian conditions, and rang...

Modeling aqueous perchlorate chemistries with applications to Mars

NASA’s Phoenix lander identified perchlorate and carbonate salts on Mars. Perchlorates are rare on Earth, and carbonates have largely been ignored on Mars following the discovery by NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers of acidic precipitated minerals such as jarosite. In light of the Phoenix results, we updated the aqueous thermodynamic model FREZCHEM to include perchlorate chemistry. FREZCHEM models...

Analyzing Hydrated Salt Solutions at the Phoenix Landing Site

Introduction: In 2008, NASA’s Phoenix lander arrived in the northern arctic plain of Mars. Its objective was to perform analyses on the subsurface water ice, ultimately characterizing the geology, climate, and habitability of the Martian polar regions. Two of the instruments on board were TECP (Thermal Electric Conductivity Probe), which recorded temperature and relative humidity measurements, ...

Hydrous Perchlorates and Their Relation to Humidity at the Phoenix Landing

Introduction: Phoenix showed the presence of ~1% perchlorate in the landing site regolith [1]. This ion is associated to sodium and magnesium [2], making these compounds ideal candidates for liquid brines on the surface. In addition, hydration-dehydration cycles may control the humidity. We study the stability of perchlorates (liquids and salts) under Martian conditions using a combination of e...
